Introduction of undergraduate major:Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation

time:2026-01-23

The undergraduate program of Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation at Nanchang University traces its roots to the Department of Mechanical Manufacturing Technology and Equipment established in 1958 at Jiangxi Institute of Technology. Recognized as a National First-Class Undergraduate Program, it was the pilot major of the first batch under the Ministry of Education’s “Outstanding Engineers Education and Training Program” and received international Engineering Education Professional Certification in 2020. Affiliated within the School of Advanced Manufacturing, the program ranks #1 in Jiangxi Province for mechanical engineering disciplines.

Integrating core knowledge from multiple disciplines such as mechanics, electronics, computer science, and automatic control, the program is aligned with the national “New Quality Productive Forces” development strategy and the “Made in China 2025” initiative, with a strong focus on cutting-edge fields such as intelligent manufacturing, robotics, and advanced equipment. The program emphasizes a talent cultivation system characterized by “solid foundation, strong practical training, and innovation-driven learning”. The program currently has 71 full-time faculty members. Among them, 22 are professors, over 80% hold doctoral degrees, 60% have overseas academic experience, and 90% possess practical engineering experience. Twenty-five faculty members have received national or provincial teaching honors, including titles such as National Outstanding Teacher and Jiangxi Provincial Teaching Master.

The curriculum features foundational and core courses such as Engineering Drawing, Mechanical Principles, Mechanical Design, Fundamentals of Control Engineering, Microcomputer Principles, CNC Technology, and Artificial Intelligence & Machine Vision. It is further structured around four specialized tracks: Mechanical Manufacturing, Mechatronic Control, Mechanical Design, and Vehicle Engineering. Leveraging established platforms including the Robotics Competition Center, the Mechanical Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center, and the Formula Racing Center, students actively participate in high-level national competitions such as the National Mechanical Innovation Design Competition for College Students and various robotics tournaments. The participation rate in discipline-specific competitions exceeds 50%, and students have consistently achieved outstanding results, including numerous national-level awards.

The graduate employment rate has remained consistently above 95%. Approximately 65% of graduates enter industries such as high-end equipment manufacturing, automotive, construction machinery, and electronics & electrical appliances. About 30% pursue further studies at “Double First-Class” universities or Project 985 institutions. For the 2023 admissions in Jiangxi Province, the program’s entry ranking was around 13,000, exceeding the provincial first-tier cutoff score by 70 points. For other provinces, the admission rankings ranged between 7,000 and 23,000.

This program is rooted in Jiangxi, serves the nation, and connects with the global stage. It is dedicated to cultivating high-caliber engineering and technical talents who possess a profound sense of social responsibility, solid engineering competence, innovative capabilities, and a global perspective. The program aims to contribute the “Red Soil Craftsmanship” and the “Intelligent Manufacturing of Jiangxi” to the national endeavor of building a leading manufacturing power.
