Introduction to the School of Advanced Manufacturing

The School of Advanced Manufacturing at Nanchang University traces its origins to the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at the former National Chung Cheng University's College of Engineering, established in 1940. After over 80 years of evolution and development, the School has become an institution with a long history, a strong academic atmosphere, and a rigorous approach to scholarship. It is also among the first in Jiangxi Province to establish a complete multi-level talent cultivation system encompassing undergraduate, master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral programs. In 1993, the School was approved for Jiangxi's first doctoral program in "Materials Processing Engineering," and in 2001, it established the province's first postdoctoral research station in "Materials Science and Engineering."

The School currently has 213 faculty and staff members, including 148 full-time teachers. Among them, 55 are professors, 49 are associate professors, and teachers with senior professional titles account for 70% of the full-time faculty. There are 28 doctoral supervisors and 67 master's supervisors, with 131 teachers holding doctoral degrees. Professor Pan Jiluan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, served as the honorary president of the university and a part-time doctoral supervisor in Materials Processing Engineering. Professor Wen Shizhu, also an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, served as the honorary dean of the School and a part-time doctoral supervisor in Mechanical Engineering.

The School comprises five departments and one center: the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the Department of Automotive Engineering, the Department of Measurement, Control Technology and Instrumentation, the Department of Energy and Power Engineering, the Department of Materials Forming and Control Engineering, and the Engineering Training Center. Relying on the School, there are six provincial-level key laboratories (engineering centers). The School possesses the nationally key cultivation discipline "Materials Processing Engineering" and the "Mechanical Engineering" discipline, which was designated as a "top priority" discipline during Jiangxi Province's 12th Five-Year Plan for higher education institutions. It has two postdoctoral research stations and first-level doctoral programs in "Mechanical Engineering" and "Materials Science and Engineering." Additionally, it offers four academic master's programs in Mechanical Engineering, Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics, Materials Processing Engineering, and Instrument Science and Technology, as well as four professional master's programs in Mechanical Engineering, Power Engineering, Materials Engineering, and Instrumentation Engineering. At the undergraduate level, the School offers six programs: Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation; Vehicle Engineering; Measurement, Control Technology and Instrumentation; Energy and Power Engineering; MaterialsForming and Control Engineering; and Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering. The first four of these programs were among the first batch of pilot majors under the Ministry of Education's "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Plan," while Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering is a program under the New Engineering Education initiative. Materials Forming and Control Engineering is a nationally distinctive specialty. Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation; Measurement, Control Technology and Instrumentation; and Materials Forming and Control Engineering have been selected as National First-Class Undergraduate Program construction sites. Energy and Power Engineering and Vehicle Engineering are Jiangxi Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Program construction sites. The Measurement, Control Technology and Instrumentation and Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation programs have successively passed international engineering education accreditation. The School currently has 2,354 undergraduate students and 693 graduate students, including 76 doctoral candidates.

Over the past five years, the School has undertaken five national major or key projects and over 60 National Natural Science Foundation projects, with total horizontal and vertical research funding exceeding 120 million RMB. It has achieved a number of internationally advanced and domestically leading results, receiving awards such as one National Technology Invention Second Prize, one National Science and Technology Progress Second Prize, one National Science and Technology Progress Third Prize, one Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress Second Prize, three provincial-level science and technology first prizes, and ten second prizes. In teaching, it has received one National Teaching Achievement Second Prize, 14 provincial teaching achievement first prizes, and 11 second prizes. The School also hosts one National Engineering Practice Education Center.

Leveraging the opportunities presented by the university's inclusion in the national "Double First-Class" initiative as a world-class discipline construction university, its status as a ministry-province co-constructed university by the Ministry of Education and Jiangxi Province, its designation as a national "211 Project" key construction university, and its role as a high-level university under Jiangxi Province's overall construction plan, the School aims to achieve "first-class teaching, first-class research, first-class management, and first-class service." With the mission of "promoting the craftsman spirit and cultivating innovative talents," it adheres to fostering virtue through education, emphasizes both teaching and research, intensifies reform efforts, and strives to build itself into a distinctive high-level school.
