Introduction of undergraduate major: Energy and Power Engineering

I. Historical Origins

The Energy and Power Engineering major of Nanchang University originated from the "Internal Combustion Engine" major established in 1978 and the "Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technology" major established in 1993. In 1998, these two majors were merged into the "Thermal Energy and Power Engineering" major. In 2013, it was adjusted to the "Energy and Power Engineering" major according to the new professional directory. In 2010, it was rated as a characteristic major of Jiangxi Province by the Jiangxi Provincial Department of Education. From 2010 to 2011, it was successively listed as a pilot major for the "Outstanding Engineer Training Program" by the Ministry of Education and Jiangxi Province. In 2017, it ranked first in the comprehensive evaluation of Jiangxi Province's majors. In 2020, it was approved as a first-class undergraduate major construction point in Jiangxi Province.

II. Faculty

There are 17 full-time teachers in this major, including 4 professors and 6 associate professors; 1 doctoral supervisor and 10 master supervisors; 16 teachers with doctoral degrees; 1 member of Jiangxi Province's "Hundred, Thousand, Ten Thousand Talents Program" and 2 provincial-level backbone teachers.

III. Teaching, Research and Discipline Construction Platform

This major is a pilot program under the "Excellence Program" of the Ministry of Education and a "First-Class Undergraduate Program" construction project in Jiangxi Province. Relevant national-level teaching platforms include the Electrical and Electronics Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, the Engineering Mechanics Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, and the Jiangling Automobile Practical Education Base. Provincial-level research platforms include the Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center for Carbon Neutrality in River Basins, the Jiangxi Province Key Laboratory of Light Alloy, and the Jiangxi Province Key Laboratory of Intelligent Robots. The major corresponds to a first-level discipline of Master degree in Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics, and admits master students in three directions: engineering thermophysics, refrigeration and cryogenic engineering, and thermal energy engineering. Through years of accumulation, the following stable and distinctive research directions have been formed: numerical simulation and experimental research on complex heat transfer and flow processes, energy-saving technologies for refrigeration and air conditioning systems and heat pump applications, and research on energy-saving and emission reduction technologies for energy and power systems and equipment. In the past five years, we have won 1 Jiangxi Provincial Natural Science Award, 1 Jiangxi Provincial Teaching Achievement Award, and 3 International Cooperation Program for Cultivating Innovative and Comprehensive Talents funded by the China Scholarship Council. This discipline has become one of the important platforms for scientific research and technology development in the field of energy and power engineering in China, especially in Jiangxi Province.

IV. Training Methods and Characteristics

This major is closely aligned with the significant national strategies such as the "Carbon Neutrality Goal" and the "Energy Revolution". It aims to cultivate high-quality, innovative talents specializing in research, technology development, engineering design, operation control, and technical economic management in the field of energy and power engineering. The major adopts a broad-based and direction-specific training model, fully considering the application of modern information, computer, and automation technologies in energy and power technologies, as well as the development of new energy technologies. Four specialized directions are offered: Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Power Machinery, Energy System Engineering, New Energy and Energy Storage. Students can freely choose one or more modules for study. Guided by the "Outstanding Engineer Program", the major currently collaborates with enterprises such as Geely Auto, Haier Smart Home Co., Ltd., and ALD Group Limited to establish "3+1" experimental classes. The first three years are spent studying theoretical knowledge at the school, and in the senior year, students participate in practical projects at the enterprises, forming a distinctive school-enterprise cooperation model. The school organizes undergraduate students to apply for innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as research training projects every year. The college hosts competitions such as the Mechanical Innovation Design Contest and the University Formula Racing, and the major organizes competitions such as Energy Saving and Emission Reduction, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technology. These activities effectively enhance students' professional practical abilities.
