Introduction of undergraduate major:Vehicle Engineering

The Vehicle Engineering program aims to cultivate innovative, applied, and interdisciplinary talents with sound character, solid foundation, broad knowledge, wide horizons, a strong sense of innovation and entrepreneurship, and practical abilities. Graduates will possess a solid theoretical foundation, specialized knowledge, and fundamental skills in automobile design, manufacturing, research, and service. Equipped with technological innovation and engineering practice capabilities, they will become advanced engineering and technical professionals capable of working in various sectors of the national economy in areas such as automobile design, development, manufacturing, application, research, and service.

This program is a comprehensive interdisciplinary field integrating mechanical engineering, computer science, electronic information, artificial intelligence, transportation, and more. It covers the fundamental theories and specialized knowledge of traditional vehicle design, manufacturing, testing, and management, while also extending into new energy vehicles and intelligent connected vehicles. Core courses include Automobile Structure, Automobile Theory, Principles of Automobile Engine, Automobile Design, Automobile Testing, Automobile Manufacturing Technology, Automobile   Electrical and Electronic technology, et al.

This program was selected for the Ministry of Education's first batch of the Excellence Engineer Education and Training Program in 2012, passed international engineering education professional certification in 2021, and is recognized as a first-class undergraduate program in Jiangxi Province. It belongs to the primary discipline of Mechanical Engineering and has established a complete academic system encompassing bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral levels.

The program currently has 13 full-time faculty members and 1 flexibly appointed faculty member. Among them, 8 hold senior professional titles, 12 have industry work experience, 1 is a recipient of the Jiangxi Ganpo 555 Talent award, 2 are recipients of the Jiangxi Outstanding Youth Fund, and 1 is recognized as a Young Talent in the Academic and Technical Leadership Program for Jiangxi's Key Disciplines. Research directions have been established in areas such as intelligent driving, vehicle dynamics and control, intelligent cockpit, automobile electronics, NVH, and automobile CAE technology. The program maintains close collaborations with well-known domestic automobile and component companies, as well as research institutes, including Jiangling Motors Co., Ltd., Jiangxi Jiangling New Energy Automobile Co., Ltd., BYD Auto, Geely Auto, Wanxiang Group, China North Vehicle Research Institute, and Tongji University Nanchang Intelligent New Energy Vehicle Research Institute. Joint research focuses on key technologies for new energy vehicles and intelligent driving, intelligent cockpit, advanced driver-assistance systems, automobile NVH, automobile lightweighting technology, automobile fatigue life and optimization, etc. In recent years, the program has undertaken over 10 national-level projects, 2 Jiangxi Provincial Key R&D Program projects, over 10 other provincial/ministerial-level projects, and over 30 industry-sponsored projects, receiving 8 provincial/ministerial-level science and technology awards.

The Vehicle Engineering program emphasizes practical teaching. It has established laboratories for automobile electronics and automobile theory, equipped with experimental apparatus such as engine test benches, motor test benches, intelligent driving vehicles, and driving simulators. The total value of teaching and research instruments and equipment exceeds 10 million RMB. The program has established research platforms including the Jiangxi Provincial Automobile Electronic Engineering Technology Research Center, the Jiangxi New Energy Vehicle Industry Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance, and the Jiangxi Provincial Key Innovation Center for Automobile Industry-Education Integration. It has also created excellent practical bases such as the College Student Automobile Innovation Design Competition Practice Base, the College Student Formula SAE Competition Practice Base, and the College Student Transportation Technology Competition Practice Base. Notably, the Nanchang University Formula SAE Team was established in 2014, has won first prize in the Chinese University Students Formula SAE Competition, and set a record for the lightest electric formula racing car in the competition's history. The team has become a significant force in promoting scientific research, innovation, and entrepreneurship among students at our university.

Career Fields: Graduates can engage in teaching and research roles at professional institutions and scientific research units, or pursue careers in product design, production, and management within automobile manufacturing enterprises and their component suppliers.

Employers: Graduates have been employed by renowned companies such as GAC Group Passenger Vehicle (Hangzhou) Co., Ltd., China FAW Group Co., Ltd., BYD Company Limited, Sany Automotive Hoisting Machinery Co., Ltd., Dongfeng Nissan Passenger Vehicle Company, Dongfeng Honda Automobile Co., Ltd., SAIC Motor, XPENG Motors, and Jiangling Motors Co., Ltd.

Further Education Institutions: Graduates have pursued advanced studies at prestigious universities including Tsinghua University, Southeast University, Tongji University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Zhejiang University, Beijing Institute of Technology, South China University of Technology, Harbin Institute of Technology, Dalian University of Technology, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Central South University, Sun Yat-sen University, and Nanchang University.
