Introduction to Academic Disciplines-Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics

time:2026-01-27

Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics (Discipline Code: 080700) and Power Engineering (Discipline Code: 085802) at Nanchang University trace their origins to the establishment of the Engineering Thermophysics major in 1990. The discipline obtained the authorization to confer Master's degrees in Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics as a first-level discipline in 2006.

This discipline closely aligns with national major strategic initiatives such as the energy revolution and the dual-carbon goals, while also serving the development needs of Jiangxi Province's "1269" Action Plan, particularly in the new energy industry chain and equipment manufacturing industry chain. It is committed to providing high-level professional services, adhering to a path that integrates industry, academia, and research, thus forming distinctive characteristics in its educational approach.

The discipline maintains stable research directions, primarily including:

  • Analysis of energy conservation and combustion in internal combustion engines.

  • Energy-saving and environmentally friendly technologies for refrigeration and air conditioning systems, and heat pump application technologies.

  • Numerical simulation and experimental research on complex heat transfer and flow processes.

  • Research on thermal power systems for new energy generation and related energy-saving emission reduction technologies.

The program currently has 30 faculty supervisors, including 9 professors and 13 associate professors. Among them, 27 supervisors hold doctoral degrees. Student learning and research are supported by platforms such as the Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center for Watershed Carbon Neutrality, the Jiangxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Light Alloy Materials, the Jiangxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Intelligent Robots, the Jiangxi Provincial Engineering Technology Research Center for Manufacturing Informatization, and the Jiangxi Provincial Engineering Technology Research Center for Automotive Electronics.

Over the past five years, the discipline has undertaken or initiated more than 80 scientific research projects, with cumulative research funding exceeding 20 million RMB. These include 14 National Natural Science Foundation projects, one sub-project of a National Key R&D Program, one Jiangxi Provincial Academic and Technical Leader Project for Key Disciplines, over 10 Jiangxi Provincial Natural Science Foundation projects, and more than 50 enterprise-commissioned technology R&D projects. Faculty and students have published over 170 papers in the past five years, including more than 130 SCI-indexed papers, and have been granted more than 60 invention patents. A series of notable achievements have been made, including two Jiangxi Provincial Natural Science Second Prizes, and one Jiangxi Provincial Teaching Achievement First Prize and one Second Prize. Furthermore, the program successfully secured approval for the China Scholarship Council's "Innovative Talent International Cooperation Cultivation Project" three times in the past five years, enabling 15 students to participate in joint training programs at renowned international universities.

With the fundamental mission of fostering virtue and nurturing talents, the discipline has produced 12 Jiangxi Provincial Outstanding Master's Theses in the past five years and has cultivated nearly 200 high-level professional technical talents in the energy and power sector for the industry.
