The Discipline of Mechanical Engineering at Nanchang University encompasses authorization programs for doctoral degrees in Mechanical Engineering, master's degrees in Mechanical Engineering, and master's degrees in Mechanical Engineering (professional). The discipline originated from the discipline of Mechanical Design and Manufacturing established in 1958 when Jiangxi Institute of Technology was founded. In 1990, it obtained the authorization program for master's degrees in Mechanical Manufacturing and Automation. Since the merger of the former Jiangxi University of Technology and Jiangxi University in 1993, under the guidance of distinguished predecessors and experts in the field of mechanical engineering, including Academician Pan Jiluan (Honorary President and Doctoral Supervisor) and Academician Wen Shizhu (Honorary Dean and Doctoral Supervisor), the Discipline of Mechanical Engineering at Nanchang University has achieved rapid development. In 2003, it was granted the authorization program for doctoral degrees in Mechatronic Engineering; in 2006, the authorization program for doctoral degrees in Mechanical Design and Theory was approved; in 2007, it was accredited as a Postdoctoral Research Station of Mechanical Engineering; in 2010, it obtained the authorization program for master's degrees in the first-level discipline of Mechanical Engineering (through direct recognition), and the authorization program for doctoral degrees in the first-level discipline of Mechanical Engineering in the same year. During the Eleventh Five-Year Plan period, the disciplines of Mechatronic Engineering and Mechanical Design and Theory were designated as Key Disciplines of Jiangxi Province. During the Twelfth Five-Year Plan period, the Discipline of Mechanical Engineering was listed as a Priority High-level Key Discipline of Jiangxi Province. The development of the Discipline of Mechanical Engineering is included in the Key Disciplines of Project 211 of the Ministry of Education. It has been one of the university's key construction disciplines from the Ninth Five-Year Plan to the Eleventh Five-Year Plan periods, and was incorporated into the First-Class Discipline Construction under the Competitiveness Enhancement Program for Universities in Central and Western China of the Ministry of Education during the Twelfth Five-Year Plan period. The discipline was rated B- in the 4th Round of National Discipline Evaluation. Its Engineering discipline ranks among the top 1% globally in the Essential Science Indicators (ESI), and it is included in the construction of the World-Class Discipline Cluster of Advanced Materials Technology at Nanchang University.

The Discipline of Mechanical Engineering currently has 32 doctoral supervisors (including part-time supervisors) and 55 master's supervisors. Research Achievements in the Past Five Years：In the past five years, the total funding for scientific research projects has reached 97.821 million RMB, with 48 national-level scientific research projects approved. Among the vertical projects, the highest funding for a single project is 10 million RMB, namely the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) project — the Project for Improving the Teaching and Training Capacity of Oral Medical Digital Technology and Medical Devices. In terms of undertaking horizontal projects to promote enterprise development through social services, 199 horizontal projects have been approved, including 10 major entrusted horizontal projects (with funding of 2 million RMB or more), with a total received funding of 40.792 million RMB. It has won 6 provincial and ministerial-level scientific and technological awards, including 4 provincial and ministerial-level awards with Nanchang University as the first completing unit, and 2 national, provincial and ministerial-level awards as a participating unit. More than 70 papers have been published in Zone 1 journals, and over 130 invention patents have been authorized. The scientific research funding has increased year by year, with an average annual incoming funding of more than 10 million RMB. Notably, a series of landmark achievements have been made, including 1 Second-Class Award of National Technological Invention, 1 Second-Class Award of National Scientific and Technological Progress, and 13 provincial-level scientific and technological awards such as the First-Class Award of Jiangxi Provincial Scientific and Technological Progress.
