Introduction

Established in March 2009, the Institute of Advanced Forming at Nanchang University is a key scientific research institution relying on the university's national key cultivation discipline "Materials Processing Engineering". It possesses multiple provincial and municipal platforms such as the Jiangxi University Science and Technology Innovation Team "Advanced Materials Processing Technology" and the Nanchang Key Laboratory of Light Alloy Materials Preparation and Processing. Meanwhile, it serves as an industry organization holding positions including Chairman Unit of Jiangxi Provincial Society of Plasticity Engineering and Executive Vice Chairman Unit of Jiangxi Forging and Stamping Association. As the core supporting unit of the Jiangxi Mold CAD/CAE/CAM R&D Center, the institute deeply connects industry resources with industrial needs.

Closely focusing on the forward-looking technological directions in the field of light alloy materials preparation and processing, addressing the major key technical demands of the advanced materials industry inside and outside Jiangxi Province, the institute devotes itself to the applied basic research of light alloy preparation and processing technologies, with key layouts in the following research directions:

Guided by the "1269" Action Plan, the institute continuously strengthens technological innovation in light alloy materials preparation and processing, accelerates the industrialization of achievements, and contributes "Nanchang University's strength" to Jiangxi's construction of a modern industrial system with national influence.

Talent Team

The institute's team is led by Academic Leader Professor Yan Hong (current Director of the institute), who is a recipient of the Special Government Allowance of the State Council, a member of the Ganpo Talent 555 Project, and a Famous Teacher in Jiangxi Province. It gathers core forces including major discipline and technical leaders in Jiangxi Province, Jiangxi Young Scientists, and young and middle-aged academic leaders in universities, such as 5 professors/distinguished researchers, 8 associate professors/senior engineers, and 10 part-time technical experts from enterprises. Committed to talent cultivation, the team has guided more than 100 doctoral and master's students in total, among whom 14 master's students and 6 doctoral students have won Jiangxi Provincial Excellent Academic Dissertations, and many graduates have grown into key backbones in the industry.

Scientific Research and Platform Construction

The institute is equipped with advanced scientific research facilities, covering a total laboratory area of 850 square meters, with the original value of scientific instruments and equipment exceeding 10 million yuan. The main equipment includes: electron beam melting furnace, precision forming testing machine, material mechanical property testing system, metal material microstructure analysis platform, non-destructive testing equipment for light alloy components, vacuum heat treatment furnace, and light alloy processing and forming simulation experimental platform. Relying on the scientific research conditions of this laboratory, it has successively established R&D bases such as the Nanchang Key Laboratory of Light Alloy Materials Preparation and Processing, the Advanced Manufacturing Research Institute co-built by Nanchang University and the People's Government of Shangli County, the Pilot Test Base for Ultra-High Temperature Investment Precision Forming, and the Jiangxi Provincial Postgraduate Workstation, possessing complete capabilities in R&D, performance testing and forming process verification of advanced alloy materials.

Since the establishment of the laboratory, the institute has achieved a series of important scientific research results: undertaking and completing more than 60 national, provincial and ministerial-level projects, as well as more than 50 horizontal projects with enterprises; winning more than 10 provincial and ministerial-level scientific and technological awards such as the Second-Class Award for Technological Progress of the Ministry of Education; publishing more than 400 papers in domestic and foreign journals, and compiling 6 monographs and textbooks, establishing a comprehensive theoretical and technical system for advanced alloy materials preparation and processing.
